Gonabaut's Tale

A long time ago, a great dark came on the jungle, killing the trees and driving out the animals. The Loas got spots all over there bodies, where they could not feel anything.

Yu au kam hia, au yu wepz. Ai gon giv Gonabaut's teio on yu. Haed wun taim, long taim baek, big daak wen kam on da jango. Au dem animauz wen run. Au da plaenz wen shrivo an fau daun fram deiz chrunks. Da jango nat wen haev no moa sheid, bat sun nat wen shain no moa. Greit daak wen kam daun chru chrunks on dem maki chriiz. Da Loachraib nat mach hapi. Haed mach daak spotz au ova demgaiz, spotz wen muv an spred, an dem gaiz nat wen fio nokain on dem spotz.

The Bondadi asked Tungi Travelcow and Tizdei Messagebird, but they could't tell him what the dark was. Finally, Gurgi Hidesnake told him to ask Mama Ibli.

Bondadi found Mama Ibli very sick, with spots all over. She couldn't see or hear. He wrote his question on her hand where she could feel it: "What is this dark?" Mama Ibli could not speak for the spots on her mouth and tongue.

Mama Ibli wrote the answer: the dark is the Bug Tribe, "They are going to eat everything, even you Bondadi." Bondadi asked what they going do. Mama Ibli told him they were going to make a warrior whelp who could fight the bugs everywhere.

Bondadi went to her. Mama Ibli got plenty big and she gave him a whelp. The whelp stood and asked, "What you need me to do?"

Bondadi told the whelp that Mama said they needed him to fight the Bug Tribe, but he didn't know how. Mama Ibli could not answer, she was close to death.

Da Bondadi, hi wen sei "au dem chriiz wen maki, au dem animauz wen run wei. Yu mama wen sei wi niid yu fo fait dem Bugchraib."

"Oki," wen sei da wep, "watchu niid mi fo du?"

Da Bondadi, hi nat kno. Hi wen aks Mama Ibli. Shi nat wen ansa, do, shi wen stei pleni woan fo da bugspotz an wepbuat an au, shi wen stei moimoi. Shi nat wen sei nokain. An da wep wen sei "shi klos on maki. Shi nat gon heop mi nau. Wea dem bugchraib stei?"

The Bug Tribe is everywhere, Bondadi told the whelp. The whelp said then he would fight them everywhere. The whelp turned into a worm and ate the spots of Mama Ibli.

Da Bondadi wen sei "Dei stei evriwea. Dei stei on om skai, on dem chriiz, on dem wataz. Au ova, da Bugchraib meik daak."

"Weo. Ai gonna fait dem evriwea, den." An da wep wen kam woam, an kraul ova Mama Ibli, an iit au dem bugchraib. Mama spotz wen go wei, an shi wen sliip izi.

Then the whelp became a bird and ate the bugs out of the sky, and he ate all the bugs everywhere. He became so fat he couldn't walk or talk or fight.

Den om kam buad, an iit dem Bugchraib aut da skai. Da sun wen shain, an dem chriiz wen groa. Dat wep wen iit evri bug araun. Hi wen kam pleni fat. Hi wen stei so fat, hi nat wen kan wak, oa tak, oa fait.

The Bondadi looked at his whelp and asked how he was going to fight, being so fat. Bondadi made a spell to take the fat off the whelp, and he made replacements of all the things the Bug Tribe had eaten out of the whelp's fat.

Da Bondadi wen luk on hiz wep an sei "Hau yu gon fait fo yu chraib, yu so fat?" Hi wen meik pleni juju. Hi wen meik juju fo teik da fat frum da wep. Hi wen teik omz fat an skuop om up naiz, put hiz bonmaak on om, so da wepz fat wen stei chriiz an animauz an au da Bugchraib wen iit. Da Bondadi put demgaiz bak wea dei wen stei.

The whelp stood and hugged Bondadi. The tribe had a biug party and cheered for the big warrior. Everybody ate and drank and danced. Even the trees danced.

Da wep wen stan up an hug da Bondadi. Haed big luau, au da chraib wen meik haiai fo da big warria. Haed pleni iit an drink an pleni pleni danz. Evribadi wen danz. Even dem chriiz wen danz.

The trees danced for the whelp, around him and on him. The whelp fought to get away, but the trees chased him and knocked everyone down. The trees broke up the party and everybody fought to hold back the trees. Bondadi stood and said "Waiho!" and everybody stopped.

Bondadi took the whelp away from the village. He told the whelp that the trees knew they were his fat, and so they wanted to stay on him. He couldn't stay in the village. He took the whelps feet and put them on backwards so that the trees could not follow him. Bondadi named the whelp Gonabaut because he couldn't stay anywhere and sent him off.

Yu nat kan stei on villaj oa on jango, wen yu stei dem chriiz gon fain yu." Hi wen teik da wepz fiit, put dem on baek-on-fran. Hi wen sei, "Nau, dem chriiz nat fain yu. Wen dem chriiz chrai fo follo yu, dei onli gon go faada awei. Wi gon call yu Gonabaut, fo yu nat kan stei nowea. Nau go!" An Gonabaut staat fo wak.

That's why Gonabaut can't stay anywhere and why his feet are backwards. Hi can look like anything, but you'll know him because of his feet. I have told you, as I was told. Now you know.
